Feds Arrest 10 in $200M Counterfeit Apparel Smuggling Case

Ten suspects were charged today in a $200 million counterfeit apparel smuggling case.

NEW YORK — Ten suspects were charged today in a $200 million counterfeit apparel smuggling case.

Federal prosecutors described it as one of the largest counterfeit busts.

The defendants were accused of smuggling counterfeit apparel through the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal from China. They were also charged with trying to bribe an undercover agent posing as a corrupt longshoreman‘s union official with $500,000 in cash.

The merchandise discovered in more than 100 shipping containers included counterfeit jeans, sneakers, handbags and other items. Among the brands were: Nike, Chanel, Burberry, Polo Ralph Lauren and Baby Phat.

Michael Garcia, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the arrests at a news conference.
