Antoine Colonna, equities analyst at Merrill Lynch in Paris, said sales were 3 percent ahead of his expectations, driven mostly by an acceleration of like-for-like, or underlying, sales.

Licensing revenue swelled 14.3 percent to 16 million pounds, or $29.4 million, from 14 million pounds, or $26 million. That growth was led by fragrances, powered by the launch of Burberry London for women earlier this year, the firm said. Burberry London for men will launch in the fall.

Burberry will report six-month results on Nov. 14.
