JONATHAN COHEN GETS FURRY: For his first foray into the accessories market, California native Jonathan Cohen is going for the unexpected: furs. “I’ve been [in New York] for 10 years, and I love the city,” said Cohen, a graduate of Parsons. “I used to not layer up as much when I first moved here, though. The first year, I broke into a sweat trying to put on boots.”
The line of fox fur accessories, done in partnership with Saga Furs, was designed to accompany his upcoming fall collection. “We’re growing as a brand,” said Cohen’s business partner, Sarah Leff. “Fur is something that we’ve been wanting to do and the partnership with Saga allowed us to go with the utmost quality.” Styles range from standard stoles to oversize wrap-like pieces. The collection will also offer a special tube stole, sold with three different print scarves to loop through the piece.
Known for his quirky prints, Cohen created several new designs for fall, including a graphic, hand-painted inkblot design. “It was this idea of destroyed elegance,” he said. “And we took that concept into the idea of furs.” To create this look in fur form, swatches of contrasting black and white fur are stitched together to achieve the graphic aesthetic. The furs are handmade in New York, and each piece is one of a kind. Cohen also incorporated his prints into the silk lining, done in design that mimics the texture of fur. In addition to the black and white print, furs come in bright cherry red and striking cobalt. Prices start at $950 for a collar and run to $4200 for a large ‘dripping dots’ wrap. Though no plans for future accessory endeavors are currently in the works, Cohen hopes to eventually branch out into sunglasses. “I think it must just be that California boy in me,” he said.
